DNC Rules meeting
The big news today is the democrats trying to decide what to do about Michigan and Florida. Since I'm a canadian I don't have a dog in that fight, but it has been interesting learning about some of the arcana that go into making the decision. There is definitely a whole lot more to be considered than is at first obvious.
A case in point is Obama's name not being on the ballot in Michigan. This just guaranteed trouble down the road. Florida's policy of not allowing candidates to take their names off seems like a better way to go.
In some ways, though, this whole thing just seems to be making a simple situation more complicated than it needs to be. The rules are the rules. The party has a policy in place to handle occasions when the rules aren't followed. Even if the voters didn't know all the rules, the party leaders in the affected states certainly did. All this talk about the sanctity of the vote seems like froth on the beer. As somebody said on CNN today, If the polls close at eight and you show up at 8:30, you don't get to vote. It doesn't matter how passionate you are about the issues or how sacred your right to vote is. The rules weren't followed so the vote isn't recorded. Does it have to be so complicated?
