British Teen Makes a Million by Sixteen

The whole field of MMO (Make Money Online) has a real smell to it. It's the smell of snake-oil, hucksters and broken dreams. If you pay any attention to it at all it most resembles a feeding frenzy. There seem to be no end of product launches by 'gurus' all claiming to be able to unlock the doors to wealth for the little guy. The dream is always to be able to buy into a turn-key system that makes it possible to earn a fortune. The system does all the work while you play video games in your underwear. Great stuff, and there really are fortunes to be made if you are selling systems for making money.
But you know what? There are lots of people who actually are making fortunes online. I know of some of them. I don't know anybody personally who has made a million bucks without effort. I certainly don't know anybody who works in his underwear. Even I don't do that. Most of the folks I know of personally are making $10k to $20k a month and they are still working at it.
What does the internet have to do with all this? Its simply a communications channel which makes it easy to get in touch with potential customers. It really is possible to make money by selling stuff without the expense of having a physical store or even any inventory. Start-up is cheaper than it is in any other field. Instead of paying with money you pay with knowledge and perspiration.
Which brings me to Christian Owens, the British schoolboy who made a million bucks by the age of 16.
First off, I have to confess that he really didn't make a million. He started at the age of 14 and his company had a million bucks in sales in the following two years. Out of that he had to pay his suppliers, advertise, etc etc, and he only actually kept 60% of that. So he only actually profited by $600,0000. Sue me.
Christian made that money by selling Mac applications. He got programmers to give him the rights to sell their stuff at a discount and then sold it online in a bundle. Each bundle was only available for a short period of time and it was all good stuff.
He didn't get rich overnight. He had the idea and then put in the time and effort of getting in touch with the programmers, setting up the server and working out all of the technical details. He worked hard after school. He succeeded. This time. He has also started a couple of other companies that haven't done that well.
